Edward Duncan (British 1803-1882) after William John Huggins (British 1781-1845): 'Black Joke' Engaging the Spanish Slave Brig 'Almirante' in the Bight of Benin - 1 Feb 1829, aquatint with hand colouring and with inscription 'To Commodore Francis Augustus Collier C.B., this plate representing H.M. brig 'Black Joke,' Lt. Henry Downes (tender to H.M.S. Sybille) engaging the Spanish slave brig 'El Almirante' in the Bight of Benin, Feby. 1st 1829, which she captured after a chase of thirty one hours, and close action of one hour and twenty minutes, is most respectfully dedicated', pub. London 1830, 41cm x 53cmNotes: the Black Joke was a slave catcher part of the West Africa Squadron, after giving chase for 31 hours the ship caught up to the Spanish slaver El Almirante (a brig twice its size). A number of slaves may be seen in the aquatint, lining the gunwale - after the battle 466 slaves were freed.
